What makes the components on our woom mountain bikes so special Part 1: The Frame

Minimal weight. Maximum fun. These four words sum up how we design and refine our ultralight, long-lasting mountain bikes and e-MTBs. With the woom OFF, woom OFF AIR and woom UP, we've made sure that there's the ultimate bunch of reliable and long-lasting bikes out there for young adventurers, starting from the age of six.

But what is it that makes our child-specific mountain bikes so special? In this series of articles, we'll introduce you to the individual components that combine to give young mountain bikers an unforgettable experience. So, where better to begin than the heart of the bike: the frame.

Function meets design: The kink in the top tube

Think of the frame as the backbone of the bike: light, strong and versatile. And these happen to be exactly the same traits that young riders need when adventuring away from the roads. Thanks to the low weight, this frame rewards kids with its child-centric usability, which means it can be steered, maneuvered and even lifted with ease.

What's more, it's been engineered with capable, trail-ready geometry that's focused on ergonomics – in short, it has one eye on performance and one eye on comfort. Unlike standard frames that usually end up compromising on certain factors, our frame is designed to not only support kids as they develop their skills and rip the trails but to do so with an efficient, comfortable and confident riding position.

Whether twisting through the woods or coming to stop on a steep section of trail, the low top tube, makes it easy to dismount safely and quickly in the sorts of unpredictable situations that you can hit upon while off-road.

Here's where the distinctive kink in the top tube scores as it allows kids to get their feet on the ground quickly without any of the bike getting in the way. The slack head angle and long wheelbase add up to a well-balanced ride and confident, capable handling

Our ergonomic frame creates a stable and intuitive platform for kids, which increases their safety and allows them to ride with more control and come alive with each section of trail.

The frame in detail:

  • Ultralight, premium aluminum frame with butted hydroformed tubes
  • Kinked top tube for safe dismounts
  • Flip-flop stem with dual positioning for handlebar height adjustment (+/−15°)
  • Purpose-designed chainstay protector

Achieve optimal control over rough stuff by setting a custom handlebar height.

The height of a bike's front end is a major factor while mountain biking and can seriously influence how controlled and comfortable the bike feels. As the stem on the woom OFF, woom OFF AIR and woom UP comes with our innovative flip-flop functionality, you can carefully customize the height of the bars to suit your child.

The stem can be fitted in two ways: negatively (with a downward slant) or positively. This means your woom mountain bike not only grows with your child and develops at the pace of their development, but can also be adjusted at a moment's notice to suit a situation or riding location.

Alongside height, our stem is also the piece that allows you to adjust the angle of the bars. This is done by rotating the bars a few degrees within the stem to achieve the desired angle. To do so, loosen the four clamp bolts somewhat and angle the bars how you want them. Once you've settled on a position, tighten the bolts up alternately, working diagonally across them until the required torque is reached (refer to the user manual). Making these tiny adjustments to the riding position allows you to find the sweet spot of control and efficiency. If you're wondering what it looks like, aim to get the rider's fingers and lower arms into a straight line.
