Riding a bike is such a fun activity for your child – especially if they're out and about on a model that suits them. But how do you know which bike is best?

You should start by figuring out which bike size your child needs. You can find out more about why it's so important to get the size right and how you go about it >> in this blog post.

Once you're happy with the size, you can start to think about which model is going to be the best choice for your child. Your main consideration here should be how and where your child is going to be using their bike. Will they be riding every day on tarmac? Are they looking forward to active off-road adventures? Or maybe they need an all-rounder to cover all the bases?

As soon as your child is over 115 cm tall (roughly 6 years and above), they have six different woom bike models to choose from: the woom ORIGINAL, woom EXPLORE, woom OFF, woom OFF AIR, woom UP and woom NOW.

Need some help picking the perfect model for your child? Look no further! Keep reading for an informative overview of the main features of each of our woom models and a description of where and how they're designed to be ridden.

woom ORIGINAL – our superlight classic

The woom ORIGINAL was the first-ever bike model designed by Marcus and Christian, the two bike-mad dads who co-founded woom. woom ORIGINAL bikes and balance bikes are made for children who are learning to ride and who want to keep working on their skills.

The key features of our woom ORIGINAL bikes include the kink in the top tube, the forgiving steering geometry and the superlight weight, which makes it easier for kids to balance and improve quickly.

The woom ORIGINAL comes in six different sizes:

  • Let the adventures begin with our two woom ORIGINAL balance bikes. The woom ORIGINAL 1 is designed for toddlers aged 18 months and up, while the woom ORIGINAL 1 PLUS is perfect for slightly older kids who start showing an interest in bikes a little later or who aren't quite ready to try out a pedal bike just yet.

You can find out exactly why our balance bikes have brake levers >> right here.
  • Our woom ORIGINAL 2 and 3 bikes are the perfect way to introduce your child to cycling. We believe that changing gears manually is too tricky for children aged between 3 and 6, so these sizes come without the gears. That means your child can focus on learning all the basic skills they need to ride a bike – balancing, pedaling, steering and braking – and then putting them all together.
  • Children between 4 and 6 years old who are more experienced on a bike and often set off on longer cycling adventures or find themselves faced with small climbs might be better off on a woom ORIGINAL 3 AUTOMAGIC – our model with automatic 2-speed hub gearing. >> You can read all about this bike right here.
  • Our woom ORIGINAL 4, 5 and 6 bikes come with 7 or 8 gears and a child-friendly twist shifter, two V-brakes and tires with maximum grip and low rolling resistance.

So who are these woom ORIGINAL models made for? They're ideal for children aged between 7 and 14 who want to ride their bike every day – usually sticking to tarmac but sometimes venturing out on easy woodland tracks and gravel paths.

Tip:

You can adapt your child's woom ORIGINAL bike to match their adventures by adding some of our woom accessories. Check out the LEGGIE Kickstand, the PICKUP Rack and the VIENNA Bell for starters. woom EXPLORE – our sporty all-rounder

The woom EXPLORE is the most recent addition to the woom family and it comes in three different sizes: 20", 24" and 26". Designed for kids and teens from 6 to 14 years old, it brings together the features of the woom ORIGINAL and the woom OFF in one bike. That makes it a sporty all-rounder promising a fun and comfortable ride on any terrain.

This comes down to these key features...

  • the optimized frame design for a sporty riding position and easy pedaling
  • the ultra-comfy saddle
  • the grippy all-terrain tires
  • the powerful disc brakes that kids can use confidently whatever the weather
  • the 7 gears with an easy-to-use twist grip or 8 gears with a trigger shifter

Designed to travel on tarmac, across gravel and through woodland, the woom EXPLORE is ready for any adventure. This bike is ideal for children who set off on shorter and longer rides, cycle their everyday journeys and enjoy exciting expeditions after school and at the weekend. If they're dreaming of a bike that's comfy to ride and easy to handle, this could be the model they've been waiting for.

Tip:

If your child will be riding their woom EXPLORE bike on public roads, there are a number of requirements that you may need to meet depending on where you live. Our top tip? Order one of our exciting accessory bundles to go with your child's woom EXPLORE bike and spend 15% less than you would if you bought all the accessories separately.

woom OFF and woom OFF AIR – our superlight mountain bikes

Available in three sizes each (20", 24" and 26"), our two mountain bike models – the woom OFF with its carbon fork and the woom OFF AIR with its air suspension fork– are designed for experienced cyclists aged between 6 and 14 who feel right at home on bumpy woodland tracks, uneven gravel trails and up in the mountains.

Ultimate comfort and maximum safety are guaranteed by the sporty frame design and the premium mountain bike components designed with kids in mind, including the trigger shifter, the hydraulic disc brakes and the grippy all-terrain tires.

Our woom OFF with a lightweight yet robust carbon fork absorbs gentle bumps and vibrations, ensuring a fun and comfy ride for kids who mainly stick to slightly uneven surfaces like woodland trails and gravel paths.

Tip:

Younger children who don't weight a lot are much better off with a rigid fork on hard surfaces. It's best not to overload them with the additional weight of a suspension fork. You can read more about this >> right here.

If your child is always heading off on off-road adventures away from the beaten track and perhaps has even mastered little jumps on their bike, the woom OFF AIR with a hydraulic air suspension fork is the better option.

The air suspension fork has a lockout function and rebound and compression damping that adjusts to the rider's weight and the terrain to improve comfort and control. The added benefit? Your child won't get tired so easily on challenging terrain.

woom UP – our smooth e-mountain bike

The woom UP is the first e-bike from woom and it comes in two sizes (24" and 26") that have been designed specifically to meet the requirements of children aged between 7 and 14.

Complete with all the same features as the woom OFF AIR, the woom UP has the added bonus of gentle pedal-assist for a smooth ride.

  • Your child can choose between three levels of pedal-assist, ranging from minimum to maximum, with a simple touch on the top tube.
  • The drive system provides progressive support, meaning it adapts automatically to the riding style and responds to even the lightest pressure on the pedals.
  • The drive system kicks in gently and provides extra power evenly when your child is heading up hills, riding into headwinds or setting off. This leaves the ride feeling natural without resistance when pedaling.

In other words, the woom UP is ideal for kids who have zero experience or full confidence on a mountain bike. It makes off-road adventures more fun than ever and eases everyday journeys for your child, especially if you live in a hilly or mountainous area and they have to cover some serious altitude on their way to school or their best friend's house.
