Answers to your questions about the woom ORIGINAL 3 AUTOMAGIC
The woom 3 AUTOMAGIC is a superlight 16" children's bike with an automatic 2-speed gear hub and numerous safety features. The gears are housed and sealed inside the hub on the rear wheel, which means they’re protected from rain, snow, dirt, and other external forces. Thanks to the open-bottom design of the chainguard, there's easy access to service the chain.
The woom 3 AUTOMAGIC is suitable for children between 4 and 6 years old, or kids who fall between 41-47” in height. It is particularly well suited for children who are already competent bike riders and ready to adventure further on two wheels or join the family on bigger bike rides. Children in this age range who are just starting to learn how to ride a bike are best served with our classic lightweight woom 3.
Compared to the standard single-speed woom 3, the first gear ratio on the woom 3 AUTOMAGIC is 17% lower while the second gear ratio is 14% higher than on the woom 3. To learn more about internal gear hubs and gear ratios, check out our blog.
The woom 3 AUTOMAGIC has two gears. The internally geared hub automatically shifts between the two gears when the Rider reaches approximately 7 mph. It will either shift up or down, depending on whether your child is speeding up or slowing down.
The woom 3 AUTOMAGIC features a special rear hub designed by industry specialists Sturmey-Archer. The gearing is housed and sealed inside the hub and shifts automatically from the first to the second gear when the bike reaches approximately 7 mph. The automatic shifting, which is not visible from the outside, is caused by centrifugal forces.
Once the pace drops below 7 mph, the automatic hub shifts back down to the first gear automatically. All the shifting takes place internally – there is no trigger shifter or gear cables.
For kids who are already competent cyclists, having a second gear will unlock new possibilities and adventures, and allow them to conquer new hills. Because it shifts automatically, young Riders are free to concentrate on the ride rather than the complexities of changing gears manually, which can be challenging at that age.
Another benefit of an internal gear hub is that it results in a gear system that’s extremely reliable and low-maintenance. Compared to a conventional derailleur and cassette, these gears are much better protected against impacts, weather conditions and dirt. This is especially beneficial for young Riders, who aren’t necessarily known for being careful.
