Here’s where you will find all the resources you need to carry out your stem service safely.

Now that your woom ORIGINAL Stem Maintenance Kit has arrived, it’s time to do a little bit of bike mechanics to secure the stem on your woom ORIGINAL. It’s a very straightforward procedure, so you can involve your child from the word go.

Before you get started, make sure you have the following items:

  • The contents of your woom ORIGINAL Stem Maintenance Kit
  • Some paper towels or a cloth
  • Some grease-dissolving cleaning agent, for example dishwashing detergent, window cleaner, rim cleaner, methylated spirits, alcohol or- cleaning petrol. Disinfectant wipes (non-greasy) are also suitable
  • A can-do attitude

Begin by watching the video for a step-by-step guide to servicing the stem on your woom ORIGINAL.

How to service your stem

  1. Loosen the bolt using the 5 mm hex key
  2. Pull the stem and bar unit up and off the bike
  3. Clean the fork steerer tube using some solvent degreaser on a paper towel or cloth
  4. Spread assembly paste evenly onto the fork steerer tube using your fingertip
  5. Remount the stem. Tip: Position the bars as straight as possible on your first time.
  6. Now straighten the bars perfectly.
  7. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 10 Nm using your new torque wrench.
  8. Check that the bars are sufficiently tightened by tilting and twisting them.

No movement at all? Excellent! Your woom ORIGINAL is now ready to ride.

Looking ahead for long-term safety

You can now add your new torque wrench to your toolbox and re-use it whenever necessary. Here’s a guide for what you should now do on an annual basis. Follow the three steps shown below to keep your woom ORIGINAL safe in the long term.

  • Loosen the bolt using your 5 mm hex key
  • Check the position of the bars and stem
  • Use your torque tool to tighten to 10 Nm

How to use a torque wrench

Let’s rewind for a moment: Torque is measured in Newton metres (Nm) and your new torque wrench is suitable for use on various bolts and components that hold your woom ORIGINAL together. You need to remember that your torque wrench is designed for tightening to specific torque requirements and not for loosening bolts

You use your torque wrench like a regular hex key. This means you insert it into the bolt and turn clockwise to tighten. As the tension on the bolt increases, the dial measures the amount of newton metres of force that you’re putting in. When that figure reaches 10 Nm, you should not tighten the bolt anymore. You have achieved the required torque.

In your user manual, you’ll find a handy list of which fastenings on your bike will benefit from the precise tightening.

Regular maintenance of your woom bike is crucial to maximize safety for your child and the lifespan of their bike.
