woom design at the MAK

6/28/2023

Klosterneuburg/Vienna, 06/29/2023: The Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna is showcasing bikes designed by the international manufacturer of bikes for children and teenagers as an example of visionary and sustainable industrial design. The special exhibition – FOCUS ON COLLECTING 9: woom bikes – explores how woom bikes are designed, following the entire process from the initial sketches and prototypes to the finished product. The "exploded" woom bike broken down into all its individual components is absolutely fascinating. The exhibition is running at the MAK until September 17, 2023.

The prestigious Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna is running its special exhibition called FOCUS ON COLLECTING 9: woom bikes until August 6. It features bikes in the best-selling woom ORIGINAL range and the woom NOW, a revolutionary urban lifestyle bike.

woom bikes are specifically engineered for the needs of their young riders with a focus on child-friendly ergonomics. woom has reinvented the children's bike with its low sitting position for added stability and flat steering angle and long wheelbase combined for a smooth ride.

Design focus

Visitors to the exhibition can follow the design process for the woom NOW children's bike from start to finish. All the steps on the way to creating a mass-produced bike are covered, including initial ideas, sketches, 3D prints, prototypes, and test rides. Three elements – the bike frame, front rack, and frame bag – are used to demonstrate how the team at woom works and to highlight what makes the design of these bikes so special.

Award-winning design

woom bikes are known and loved for their light weight, numerous safety features, child-specific frame geometry – and their smart and timeless design. It's easy to spot a woom bike on the street thanks to its sleek silhouette, clear, functional shape, and eye-catching two-color design. Appreciation for that distinctive look that defies short-lived trends has been shown in the form of many international design awards, including the German Design Award, the iF Award, and the Red Dot Award.

Lilli Hollein, General Director and Artistic Director at the MAK said: "woom bikes combine intelligent industrial design and innovative circular design with a keen entrepreneurial spirit and reflect the zeitgeist with their commitment to ergonomics, sustainability, and environmentally friendly mobility. It gives us great pleasure that we are able to demonstrate within the MAK Design Collection how an Austrian company with a design-driven strategy is contributing to the design history of the bicycle.”

woom anniversary

Christian Bezdeka, one of the founders of woom, is over the moon about the exhibition at the MAK: "We put so much work and attention to detail into the design of woom bikes. The fact that one of the leading institutions for contemporary art and design has dedicated an entire exhibition to our bikes attests to the high quality of our product design. The entire team is humbled by this huge honor bestowed on us by the MAK. We couldn't have asked for a better gift to mark our company's tenth anniversary."

Garage origins

Christian Bezdeka and Marcus Ihlenfeld founded woom in a garage in Vienna ten years ago. The two dads had been searching for the perfect bike for their own children. Having no luck, they decided to take matters into their own hands and reinvent the children's bike themselves. In a matter of years, woom had become a market leader. And its bikes are now available in 30 countries around the world. In 2022, woom broke its own annual sales record by taking over €100 million.
