The woom EXPLORE comes in three different sizes and is an all-rounder for children aged six to fourteen, designed for riding in the city or countryside, both on asphalt and light off-road terrain. Note that the woom EXPLORE is not intended for mountain bike trails or the bike park. Choosing the right woom bike for your child depends on where they primarily plan on riding: Use our bike finder or bike comparison tool to determine the ideal woom bike for your child’s bike life.
The woom EXPLORE marks the development of our woom ORIGINAL for older children aged six to fourteen. This bike’s more advanced build offers enhanced safety (note the disc brakes and grippy all-terrain tires) as well as improved comfort (achieved through a new, more ergonomic grip design, comfier saddle, new shifting components, and clear ABC guide zones on the seatpost and stem to help you dial in the perfect bike fit). As such, it unlocks a broader adventure radius than the woom ORIGINAL so that young riders can venture out of their immediate neighborhood, away from the tarmac and enjoy longer rides into the countryside on some light off-road terrain. The frame geometry has also been revised, making it sportier and more pedal-efficient.
Visually, the woom EXPLORE has taken a different path to the woom ORIGINAL. It has been revised from the ground up to cater to the style preferences of older kids, with black accents (fork and stays), black rims, matte finish, more angular frame, and a cleaner design that can be customized with stickers.
Yes, absolutely. After feedback from our community that the twist shifter from microSHIFT on the woom ORIGINAL 4 was quite hard to use, we've not only worked together with microSHIFT to improve the system (on the woom ORIGINAL) for less friction and easier actuation, but also decided to spec the woom EXPLORE 4 with a Shimano drivetrain, which uses their easy-to-use Revoshift twist-shifter.
Older kids, starting at around age seven, who are already comfortable with gears will benefit greatly from a trigger shifter. With one lever to shift up and another to shift down, they can change gears smoothly, precisely, and quickly. What's more, the microSHIFT trigger shifter on the woom EXPLORE 5 and 6 is specifically designed for this age group, making it particularly easy to use. It features a rubber coating for better grip – even when hands are sweaty – and is perfectly positioned for the shorter reach of a child’s fingers.
For younger children who are just learning how to use gears, a twist shifter is actually a better option. It's simpler, more intuitive, and easy to master. Twisting forward shifts up a gear, and twisting backward shifts down. Since the whole hand is involved, rather than just the thumb or index finger (as with a trigger shifter), this design is perfect for an age group who are still developing finger strength. In short: twist shifters are a child-friendly, intuitive way to get familiar with gears.
The more advanced components on the woom EXPLORE, such as its disc brakes, more cutting-edge drivetrain, and more comfortable grips, not only allow a wider scope of use for this all-rounder, but also come with inherently higher costs than the woom ORIGINAL.
Yes—in part. The woom EXPLORE in sizes 5 and 6 will have a permanent place in our lineup, and the woom ORIGINAL in sizes 5 and 6 will now only be available as long as stocks last.
Over time it has become clear just how experienced older children are on their bikes by the time they're riding the 5 and 6, which is why we've carefully designed the woom EXPLORE to meet the needs and design expectations of this particular age group. The woom EXPLORE is therefore not just visually different to the woom ORIGINAL, but also specced with more advanced technical features like hydraulic disc brakes and even more age-specific frame geometry. This is to ensure that the woom EXPLORE provides kids and families with the extra safety and comfort that's required in order to unlock bigger and broader adventures, and therefore maximum levels of fun.
Yes. All additional bits of gear for the woom ORIGINAL fit the woom EXPLORE in the same size.
This largely depends on the rider’s individual needs and how they plan to use their woom EXPLORE. Since the woom EXPLORE is perfect for light off-road adventures on dirt trails or forest roads, as well as longer rides, mounting our PICKUP rack could be really useful for carrying day-ride essentials or even overnight gear. If the bike is going to see daily action, adding mudguards and a kickstand will improve comfort and make great everyday additions. To boost safety and meet legal road-use requirements in some countries, it can be as easy as adding a bike bell and lights.
This is a GoPro mount. For kids that are keen to document their rides and capture the action going on behind them, this mount allows them to have a GoPro action camera in use during rides.
All spare parts available for the woom EXPLORE – including grips, tires, brake pads and touch-up paint for the frame and fork – can be found in our spare parts shop or through your local woom dealer.
Yes. You can have the saddle as low as the rider needs it to be and attach the rear reflector elsewhere on the bike. As it has a rubber strap, it can be attached to one of the seatstays instead.
No. The second generation of our woom OFF and woom OFF AIR mountain bikes (model year 2023 onwards) are the only models in our lineup to feature tubeless-ready wheels and tires.
No, the saddle tilt is not adjustable. However, this saddle has been specifically developed for each age group, so that each frame size (4, 5 and 6) has its own perfectly proportioned saddle that is tuned to the ergonomics of the rider for optimal comfort. The standard saddle tilt has been carefully considered based on the bike's geometry to create a comfy and efficient riding position.
