woom goes MAK The Museum of Applied Arts has added woom children's bikes to its Design Collection

12/05/2022

Klosterneuburg, 12 May 2022: the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna will add the ORIGINAL series of woom bikes to its Design Collection. Soon, the children's bicycles, which have already received numerous international design awards, will be exhibited as an example of best practice in visionary industrial design.

"woom bikes are a prime example of the power compelling design has to rise above the fray,” says Lilli Hollein, General Director and Artistic Director, MAK, on the occasion of the transfer of the woom bikes in early May in the MAK Columned Main Hall. "woom bikes combine intelligent industrial design and innovative circular design with a keen entrepreneurial spirit and reflect the zeitgeist with their commitment to ergonomics, sustainability and environmentally friendly mobility. It gives us great pleasure that woom bikes now demonstrate within the MAK Design Collection how an Austrian company with a design-driven strategy contributes to the design history of the bicycle.

Visionary industrial design

The popular bikes for children and teenagers from Klosterneuburg near Vienna not only feature light weight, a host of safety features and child-friendly frame geometry, but also smart, timeless design. Back in 2013, when woom founder Christian Bezdeka started the company with co-founder Marcus Ihlenfeld in a garage in Vienna, he already knew that he wanted to create a timeless design classic. With their pared-down silhouette, clear, functional shape and eye-catching two-color design, woom bikes have a distinctive look that defies short-lived trends.

The design of the woom bicycles has already been awarded numerous international prizes, such as the German Design Award from the German Design Council, the iF Award, the Red Dot Award, to name just a few.

But, for woom founder Bezdeka, recognition by the MAK, one of the most renowned institutions for contemporary art and design in Europe, is probably the most important honor bestowed on his work:

"We put so much work and attention to detail into the design of woom bikes. The fact that our bikes are now part of the MAK Design Collection attests to the high quality of design that goes into our bikes. And of course it is a particular honor for my work as an industrial designer, a high point for me personally,” says Bezdeka.

Design is much more than just giving shape to "things"

The woom bikes will soon be on display at the MAK DESIGN LAB. Under the direction of Marlies Wirth, curator of Digital Culture and head of the MAK Design Collection, the MAK DESIGN LAB, with its 2,000 square meters of exhibition space, makes it possible to experience the diverse ways in which design can contribute to positive change. Contemporary projects that respond to the challenges of the 21st century, underscore problems, and propose alternatives or solutions are contextualised historically in the MAK collection within the milieu of a many-layered contexts. Among the 500 or so items on display at the MAK DESIGN LAB are now the woom ORIGINAL series and the woom NOW, the brand new urban lifestyle bike from woom.
